This is a one day, 8-hour program that has been certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) and satisfies numerous state training mandates.

The course provides law enforcement officers with an awareness of mental health issues and tools to interact more effectively with individuals who may be in a mental health crisis. Officers will leave the class with a better understanding of what steps they can take to promote a peaceful resolution to a crisis incident and connect an individual with the help they need.

Topics covered include:

  1. Prevalence of mental illness
  2. History of the mental health system and its impact on law enforcement
  3. Signs & symptoms of common mental illnesses likely to be encountered
  4. Treatments & Medications
  5. Suicide warning signs
  6. Police interaction models
  7. De-escalation strategies
  8. Illinois Mental Health Code & Involuntary Placement
  9. Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and community resources
  10. Officer wellness
